Content and Goals

An efficient criminal justice system is essential for the penal processing of systematically committed human rights violations. This applies particularly to the post-conflict situations in sub- Saharan Africa. The one-year LLM programme in “Transnational Criminal Justice and Crime Prevention – an International and African Perspective” offered at the South African-German Centre for Transnational Criminal Justice therefore includes modules in:

  • International criminal justice
  • Penal processing of systematically committed human rights violations (transitional justice)
  • Combating organised crime, money laundering, and corruption

Courses at the centre are taught by distinguished academics from both partner universities and by international experts. The LLM course is complemented by a subsequent PhD programme. Both programmes are flanked by German language and culture courses, plus a summer school held in Berlin.

The programme aims to train lawyers in the fields of international criminal law and white-collar crime, specifically, in the African context.

The Partners

University of the Western Cape, Law Faculty (UWC)
The University of the Western Cape is among the most important universities in South Africa. The Law Faculty at UWC is one of the very few institutes in South Africa to offer the option of part-time studies alongside its full-time programmes.
Undergraduate courses are primarily designed for the training of lawyers, while the postgraduate programme trains experts in various law specialisations.

Humboldt-University of Berlin, Faculty of Law
The internationalisation of legal training is a major feature in the profile of the Faculty of Law at the Humboldt University Berlin, Germany. As a result, many international programmes and contacts have been established at the Law Faculty. The many years of cooperation with the University of the Western Cape (since 1993) play a vital role in this respect. Besides the visiting professor and scholar programme for faculty members at the partner university, this cooperation focuses primarily on joint research projects and the exchange of international experts at jointly attended conferences.
